The history, the features, and the most famous examples of European architecture, during a period extending from the rise of the Gothic, or pointed, style in the twelfth century to the general depression which overtook the Renaissance style at the close of the eighteenth, form the subject of this little volume. I have endeavoured to adopt as free and simple a mode of treatment as is compatible with the accurate statement of at least the outlines of so very technical a subject. Though it is to be hoped that many professional students of architecture will find this hand-book serviceable to them in their elementary studies, it has been my principal endeavour to adapt it to the requirements of those who are preparing for the professional pursuit of the sister arts, and of that large and happily increasing number of students who pursue the fine arts as a necessary part of a complete liberal education, and who know that a solid and comprehensive acquaintance with art, especially if joined to some skill in the use of the pencil, the brush, the modelling tool, or the etching needle, will open sources of pleasure and interest of the most refined description.

Architecture Gothic and Renaissance by T. Roger (Thomas Roger) Smith. A technical book explaining in detail every nail and bolt in the construction of Gothic buildings. The book has careful plans for the readers to have all the necessary information they need for building Gothic structures. We are taken to England where the term gothic refers to the Goths' people who were thought to be uncouth. The buildings in early constructions are very crude and unattractive becoming structures that came from the careful use of stone, plans, and building techniques with flying buttresses adding support for the heavy vaulting. The authors speaks about the rise, decline, and elimination of the Gothic Period after spreading to France, Germany, and the Northern and Southern European Countries. He decribes the changes in the building techniques as assimilation of the Gothic period rose and fell. The French's different races and cultures change the Gothic style making it more elaborate and changing the interior of the churches plus adding other buildings as well as private homes and castles.
The Gothic period decline change as the people change with the Renaissance.
The book is a excellent example of technical writing with excellent examples.

Architecture Gothic and Renaissance T Roger 9788826434803 Books Reviews
I just received my physical copy of this book that I ordered because the version does not include the illustrations, and I thought they would surely exist in the paper version. Was I ever wrong!! No images and TINY font—I was better off with the digital for simply reading the text! What a waste of money!!! And this is the icing on the cake it's available on books.google.com for free WITH all the illustrations!!!
This could be interesting but it came with no illustrations, rendering it next to usless.
Excellent Foundation Literature on this subject. Well written and stands as seminal treatise.
